USER questions
Why is my status set on inactive? Following could be the reason:
- You have subscribed as a user to the Wrecksite, but you did not re-confirm your e-mail address. You need to check your inbox for a message from the wrecksite and then open that mail and click on the link in that mail.
- You have changed your e-mail address. You need to re-confirm your e-mail address. (see above)
- You have unsubscribed by setting your status to inactive.
- An administrator has found that you are infringing Copyrights.
- An administrator has found that your entries in the database are either malicious or not reliable.
Note: If you didn't get any confirmation mail,
contact an administrator.
How can I contact an administrator directly? You can not contact an administrator directly, unless he/she has disclosed an e-mail address to the public.
Click
here if you want to contact an administrator from the Wrecksite via a form.
I don't want people to see my full name appearing next to an update.
If you do not want your full name to appear next to an update, please change your visibility to pseudonym in the menu "my data" > "profile". Type a meaningful pseudonym and save your new settings.
I don't want people to see my personal data when they click on my name.
If you do not want your data to be seen (mail, telephone, fax, address), please change this in the page "my data" > "profile". Uncheck the mail, telephone and address boxes so that they look empty like this: and save your new settings.
Why can't I change my name, once I am subscribed? This is a security precaution of the Wrecksite. We want to keep track of our users. When they continuously change their name, this is impossible to do. If you want to change your name because there is a typing error in it, please,
contact an administrator.
How can I unsubscribe to the Wrecksite?
Go to your profile and set your status to "de-activated". You will get a warning first. Then confirm your change.
A confirmation mail will be sent. Note that, even if you unsubscribe, the data you have entered will remain in the database. In the updates you did, your name will be changed to "unsubscribed". None of your personal data will be revealed to the public.
How can I subscribe to the Wrecksite? If you want to enter information in the Wrecksite, you need to subscribe.
Click
here if you want to subscribe.
How can I enter a new wreck in the Wrecksite?
When you have subscribed and activated as a user, you can enter a new wreck using the menu "my data" > "new wreck".
How can I enter a new position/history/image/wreck description for a wreck?
Under each of these items, there should be link like: click here if you want to add information.
Why is the position that I have entered not the first one to show on the Wrecksite?
As a wreck can have several positions, entered by several users, the wrecksite has to select one of those and only one to display as the "first position". This position is also the one used to make a projection of the wreck on any chart or Google Map. The Wrecksite uses it's own algorithm to check which of the entered positions is the most reliable and accurate.
What does division 1'=1000 or 1'=60" mean?
1'=60" means that the position you are entering is in the old format DD°MM'SS". Hence, the last two digits are the seconds, ranging from 00 to 59.
1'=1000" means that you are entering a position in the new format DD°MM,MMM' where the last digits are the decimal of the minutes. It doesn't matter if you enter 2 or 3 digits here. E.g. 52°30,12 or 52°30,120 are the same.
Example: a position 50°30,500' in division 1'=1000 is the same as a position 50°30'30" in division 1'=60".
Note: the Wrecksite recalculates every position to another common usable format, in order to display a wreck on a chart.
What does system ED50, ETRS89, WGS84.. etc mean? It is beyond the scope of this FAQ to explain this here in detail. We refer for more information to Wikipedia:
WGS84,
ETRS89,
ED50,
OSGB36.
I tried to upload a picture or a document, but it failed to upload.
When uploading a picture or any other file, it will take some time before the file is uploaded from your computer to the Wrecksite. This depends mostly on your internet connection. Please, wait until the upload is fully done, before clicking away from the page you were using.
It is also possible that you are trying to upload a file that is far too big to upload. Restrict files to a max. size of 3MB.
How to convert an image to an appropriate format? The Wrecksite does not allow big images to be uploaded to the server. Especially .bmp and .tiff images can be sometimes very large and take unnecessary space on the server and make the Wrecksite less performant. We therefore encourage users to convert their images to jpg (JPEG) or gif format. There are many graphical programs that can do that for you. Most Windows computers do have a program called Paint on board. That program can be used to do this conversion. Simply save your file as "jpg" or "gif". There are also other programs such as
ACDSee and Photoshop that can be used to do this job. The best size of a picture is between 50kB and 150kB. (kilobytes)
What do the icons

mean and why do they not appear sometimes?
: this icon means that you can edit the item. Click on the icon and the Wrecksite will set that item in edit mode.

: this icon means that you can "trash" the item. Trashing means that the item won't be visible anymore to anybody, including yourself. If you accidently trashed an item and you want it back, please, contact a Wrecksite administrator.

: this icon means that you can "delete" the item. This icon is only available to administrators. Deleting is a permanent removal from the database. A deleted item can not be recovered.
The icons above will only appear, if you were the person who added the item to the Wrecksite. That means that only you can edit or trash it. Even administrators do not have the right to edit your item. There is one exception: an administrator has the right to trash or delete an item. With this in mind, it is clear, that you won't see any of the icons above, if the item was not entered by yourself. With this precaution we protect our users and also the wrecksite from malicious content.
